In its nascent stage, the department embarked on its mission with the invaluable blessings of Swami Ranganathandha, the then Vice President of Sri Ramakrishna Math. This spiritual guidance underscored the initial focus of the department, resulting in the introduction of the seminal course, “Ethics and Culture,” in 1987, the year the college attained autonomous status. Significantly, this course was integrated into the curriculum for all undergraduate degree programs, spanning six semesters, demonstrating the college’s profound commitment to instilling ethical principles and cultural understanding in its students. The innovative nature and effectiveness of this initiative garnered national recognition, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) lauding the “Ethics and Culture” course as the “NGM Model,” a benchmark for other institutions to emulate. Building upon this strong foundation, the department evolved and, in 2006, the course was thoughtfully renamed “Human Excellence Education,” reflecting a broadening scope and a more contemporary understanding of holistic development.
