What to evaluate
- Originality and significance of the contribution

- Whether the conclusions follow from the results, without claims the evidence cannot support
- Correct use of classical sources and terms
- Clarity, organisation and length
- Relevance and accuracy of references
- Ethical issues – ethics approval, consent, trial registration, adverse events, suspected plagiarism or data problems
Writing the report
- Summary – the main claims of the paper in your own words.
- Major issues – problems that must be addressed for the paper to be publishable.
- Minor issues – presentation, wording and referencing points.
- Confidential comments – anything for the editor only.
- Recommendation – accept, minor revision, major revision or reject.
Be specific, constructive and courteous. Do not ask authors to cite your own work unless it is genuinely essential.
