Gyan mudra, also referred to as chin mudra, is a revered hand gesture or ‘seal’ utilized to channel energy and enhance concentration. Recognized as one of the most significant and widely practiced mudras, it appears in various traditions including Buddhist, Hindu, and Yoga practices. The term ‘Gyan’ comes from Sanskrit, meaning ‘knowledge’ or ‘wisdom,’ which is why this gesture is often called the Mudra of Knowledge.
Traditionally, Gyan mudra is performed during seated meditation; however, many contemporary practitioners also incorporate it while performing standing asanas (postures), such as utthita parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose) or natarajasana (Dancer’s Pose).
This mudra is created by connecting the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger, while the remaining fingers remain extended. It is frequently utilized during meditation and is thought to boost focus, memory, and mental clarity. Many practitioners assert that it can aid in reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Gyan Mudra is also believed to activate the root chakra, fostering a feeling of stability and grounding
Method:
Touch the tip of the thumb to the tip of the index finger, with the other three fingers stretched out.
Specialty:
As it is a mudra of knowledge, it enhances the knowledge. The tip of thumb has centers of pituitary and endocrine glands. When we press these centers by index finger the two glands work actively.
Time duration:
There is no particular time duration for this mudra. You can practice by sitting, standing or lying on bed whenever and wherever you have time.
